Mma is Ready for the Mainstream

May 13th, 2009 by admin
2008 saw massive growth for the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship), the premiere Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) organization on the planet.  With UFC 83 they broke new records in Canada, and the event sold out faster than any other event in histroy. With the rise of Brock Lesnar as a legitimate heavywieght, the UFC brought in millions of new fans, and also garnered mainstream media attention fro sports outlets like ESPN that up until that point had been unprecedented. With a total of 12 pay-per-view (PPV) events, the UFC has gone to set a new record in PPV revenue for yet another year.

2006, which was a banner year, was supposed to be the ceiling for what they could accomplish according to some pundits, but after an even more successful 2007 and 2008 one thing is becoming apparent.  The UFC is about to get huge.  Now, one could argue that the UFC already is huge, but in terms of household recognition the UFC has only scratched the surface.  Walking down the street you could ask anybody who Shaq O’neil is and it is almost guaranteed that they will know who he is.  The same can not be said, however, for Chuck Liddell, the promotions biggest star. That’s not to say that Liddell doesn’t get mobbed by fans wherever he goes, because he does, but even at the height of his popularity he is not as well-known as one of the major sports stars like A-Rod or David Beckham.

But that could all change soon.  As the UFC ventures deeper into Europe and cements their position as the leader in Combat Sports, they tighten their stranglehold on the market and ensure growth in the years to come.  The UFC is also taking steps to get their product out to millions of new fans via the new UFC Undisputed 2009 video game that will be released not only on the next gen consoles but also as a mobile phone version.

2009 should be a banner year for the company.  Dana has said that there will be big things coming in 2009, and there is no reason to doubt him.  Year after year the promotion has delivered, and year after year they become a more dominant force in the industry.  It’s not a question of if the UFC will break into the mainstream, but when.  I think it will be sooner than later.

The Critical Difference Between A Fighter And A Killer

May 12th, 2009 by admin
Lately, here in Las Vegas, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting a number of Mixed Martial Arts competitors from the various “No Holds Barred” events like the UFC and Pride. For the most part these fighters were amazing physical specimens and tremendous competitors. Their skills in the arena are impressive and fun to watch. The other factor across the board is the fighters I met are very good natured guys.

At one of the events I was introduced by an MMA friend of mine to one of the top competitors and this fighter asked through his translator if I was a MMA competitor. Before I could answer, my friend (who had a couple of beers in him since he was not on this fight card) smiled and said, “Nah, this guy’s a killer, he just likes to teach you how to stab people to death or beat their brains out with a tire iron. You’d like his course!”(Always great to have friends give this kinda PR “help”)

Then the fighter asked if I taught how to “defend” against knives and guns. My friend once again “answered” for me saying “Oh yeah and more than one attacker, I mean, its prison riot training” (Again very “helpful”; I’m sure the translator loved me!) Then the fighter told of his cousin being assaulted and stabbed by 2 men in his home country. He said he felt bad because he truly couldn’t give his cousin (who survived the attack) any “tips” on how to “fight” people with knives.

He then said: “Quite frankly for all my skills in the ring I doubt I could have done much better. I know how to kick someone’s ass on the mat but on the street it’s so different.”He then had to leave and get ready for his match (which he easily won that night, absolutely wrecking his opponent). We exchanged info and he got the dates when I’d be in Europe this year.

This meeting got me thinking about the difference between a fighter and a killer: The fighter competes to better an opponent; the killer is solely focused on ending the other person. The fighter seeks to score points or get someone to submit; the killer seeks to shut down the other’s brain. The fighter is good at kicking someone’s ass; the killer knows how to irreparably injure vulnerable areas of the human body, permanently wrecking the function of that area.

The fighter relies on superior strength, speed and skill; the killer uses stealth and violence of action to get his results. The fighter’s skills deteriorate after his competitive years are over; the killer’s skills can last a lifetime. The fighter’s skills work best in the controlled environment of the ring; the killer’s skills work in any act of violence.

I could go on but you get the point. Now some of you may be pursuing competitive MMA careers and I wish you the best. After you hang up your gi or MMA trunks you may find the skills of a killer more useful. For the rest of you please ask yourself where do you see yourself applying your martial arts or combat sport training?

If it is in the chaotic world of real violence then you are hamstringing yourself with rules and skills that are only good for the young, fast, and strong. Not to mention whether or no the other guy plays by your rules; most murderers tend not to abide by any competition standards.

At least explore the world of the killer and see how despite the name, the skills are easily learned and last a lifetime. Also the byproduct of learning these skills is you get to live a far more relaxed and peaceful life. Strange but true. Remember there is a big difference between being a killer and a murderer. And if you face a murderer; then only the skills of a killer will properly prepare you for that situation.

Mixed Martial Arts’ Ken Shamrock Busted for Steroids

May 11th, 2009 by admin
On February 13th, UFC hall-of-famer Ken Shamrock got a quick win over super heavyweight Ross Clifton at the Wargods “Valentine’s Eve Massacre” in Fresno, CA. Unfortunately, after the fight, Ken tested positive for 3 types of anabolic compounds classified as steroids – Stanozolol and two Nandrolone-based substances: 19-Norandrosterone and 19-Noretiocholanolone; according to a statement issued by the California State Athletic Commission on February 18th. Ken was hit with an immediate year long suspension and fined $2,500. His camp adamantly denied the allegations and is appealing the charges.

GIVE ME A FREAKIN’ BREAK!! While I’m not a doctor, a chemist, a sports medicine professional, or even an athletic trainer, I am a 36 year old male of above average intelligence, who has been lifting weights, competing in sports, and around athletes of all levels for most of my life. So to Ken I say - stop the charade and take your punishment like a man. Have a little more respect for your fans and the people who are still willing to watch your washed-up, 45 year old ass get into the ring against tomato cans so that you can collect the money that wasn’t available to you 15 years ago when you deserved it! Really!

As I watched the replay of the Shamrock vs Clifton fight on Youtube, I immediately called a friend of mine, who is a Ken Shamrock fan, and said to him, “you’ve gotta see how juiced up Ken Shamrock is!! He must be on some crazy stack! He’s so pumped…and he’s got veins popping out of his bi’s and shoulders…it’s crazy! He better hope they don’t test him”. Then a day later, the news broke. I’m not claiming to be a genius, but rather am pointing out that it was so incredibly obvious that he was on some heavy shit. In my opinion the CSAC could have convicted him just based on his appearance. When was the last time you saw a 5’10″, 45 year old man with a six pack, 20 inch arms and shoulders that look like bowling balls?

I may actually be a bit more savvy than the average sports enthusiast or MMA fan, as I’ve worked out in hardcore gyms (as well as the health club type gyms like NYSC and Bally’s) throughout New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania since the age of 15. I’ve had workout partners who were 100% natural and partners who have been on more drugs than bodybuilding’s Mr. Olympia. So I can pretty much look at someone and tell you whether or not they are using, and I may even be able to call out their drug(s) of choice, how long they’ve been on, and even when they went off cycle.

So when Ken tells us he’s clean, I say – what a jerk-off!! And I’m singling Ken out this time, but this goes for anyone who denies it when they get caught. If you get caught, man up to it and take your punishment. Everyone knows the rules and the consequences for breaking them, so just grow some balls and take your medicine the same way you took the sauce – bent over with your pants down. Is this to say that every drug test is 100% accurate and conclusive? No. And that there aren’t some over the counter supplements that can produce a false positive? No. But really, when you’re a known juice-head like Ken, whose own brother even outed him numerous times, just have a little respect for the public who pays to watch you fight. Don’t treat us like a bunch of idiots.

I think most fans will have more respect for those who get caught, if they admit it. It doesn’t make it right, or excuse them from their due punishment, but it makes it easier to continue to root for them. Nobody likes a cheater, but everybody hates a coward.

In my opinion, the guys who are getting pinched by the athletic commissions today are pretty stupid, or their trainers are numbskulls. If you want to cheat, learn how to do it without getting caught. And if you are a cheater who hasn’t been caught yet, keep your mouth shut, consider yourself lucky, and don’t press your luck.

Don’t interpret this post as me taking a stance against performance enhancing drugs. In fact, to the contrary, I’m actually for the legalization of drugs in sports. I am however, totally against cheating. And as the rules of sports stand today, using PED’s is illegal.

For now, let me leave you with the following long list of known users and a short list of suspected users.
